The MIRAI-Setu Program, sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Japan, is an initiative designed to strengthen Japan–India cooperation by fostering the next generation of globally minded engineering and IT professionals.
The MIRAI-Setu Program 2026, aimed at fostering friendships and to promote mutual understanding between Indian graduates and Japanese companies, increase the number of personnel who will contribute to the economic and social development of both Japan and India, and thereby promote the circulation of human resources between the two countries.
Objectives
Under the auspices of the MIRAI-Setu Program, the outstanding Indian undergraduate and graduate students, primarily from engineering and IT disciplines, are invited to Japan for a one-month program. Participants gain exposure to internship opportunities with leading Japanese companies and engage in academic exchanges with Japanese universities.
Programs Details:
- Participants: Undergraduate and graduate students and a few faculty members
- Program Duration: 30 days
- Program Dates: 06th October – 04th November 2026
- Program Mode: In-person
- Targets: Age 18+ Indian Youth
Application requirements
Participants must:
- Be mentally and physically healthy and able to adapt well in a new environment;
- Understand the purpose of the program and have deep knowledge and practical skills regarding the manufacturing and industrial technologies used by the host companies.
- Be able to engage in assigned group activities;
- Be students who have not begun job hunting, have deep interest in Japan and desire to contribute to the economic and academic development of both Japan and India, and in particular, are interested in seriously seeking career opportunities in Japan or with Japanese companies in India, or pursuing higher education opportunities in Japan.
Applicants must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:
1. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of submitting their application.
2. Applicants must be citizens of India.
3. Applicants must be currently enrolled at one of the following institutions:
– IIITDM Jabalpur
– IIT Hyderabad
– IIT Guwahati
– IIT Madras
4. Undergraduate applicants must be in their 3rd or 4th year of study, while postgraduate applicants must be in their 1st or 2nd year of their degree program.
5. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in one of the following disciplines:
– Mechanical Engineering
– Materials Engineering
– Applied Chemistry
– Artificial Intelligence (AI)
– Information Technology (IT)
– Information Security
– Cybersecurity
(The students can apply from interdisciplinary departments, both from undergraduate and postgraduate studies, provided that they are studying in fields that match the qualifications and skill sets required by the host companies.)
Program Highlights:
A. Japanese Company visits and internships:
During the company visits, Indian participants will visit Japanese manufacturing / IT companies and expand their understanding of Japanese business culture through exchanges with company managers and staff. They will also learn about Japanese companies, including the distinctive challenges and opportunities they face.
During the internship, participants will experience Japanese business culture and working style by actually working at Japanese companies.
This experience will deepen mutual understanding about each country’s respective culture, customs, etc. Furthermore, through the work experience, the interns will increase their professional knowledge and skills, gain a better understanding about working in a Japanese company, and expand their professional opportunities.
B. Inter-university exchanges:
Inter-university exchanges provide opportunities for Indian students to visit universities in various parts of Japan and interact with Japanese students through campus tours and academic exchange events.
Participants can expand their academic networks through special lectures and laboratory visits, and explore possibilities for future joint projects and study abroad opportunities.
In addition, participants can deepen their understanding of Japanese university education and research environments, build networks with Japanese professors and students, and lay a foundation for future academic exchanges.
Fees covered:
The following are arranged by AFS and fees covered by the scholarship:
- Round-trip travel between Delhi and Tokyo
- Accommodation, meals and transportation during the stay in Japan
- Medical Insurance and Overseas Travel Accident Insurance during the program
Note: Participants are responsible for personal items such as passport, visa and personal spending money during the program
